GCS Employees, Schools Donate More than $400,000 to United Way
Guilford County Schools presented the United Ways of Greensboro and High Point with its largest donation to date, $402,227, during a reception at Northwood Elementary Wednesday.
The funds are collected from employee donations and school fundraisers throughout the year. Northwood was the first GCS school to reach 100 percent employee participation.
“Our teachers and staff give to the United Way because they love kids,” explains Amy Holcombe, executive director for strategic planning and development and 2016 GCS campaign chair. “The United Way helps provide services to support our students when they leave our classrooms, and we are grateful for that partnership.”
The United Way of North Carolina also named Guilford County Schools, Pearce Elementary and Northwest Middle as 2016 Spirit of North Carolina Award winners.
To earn the award, companies and organizations are judged on seven standards of excellence, including volunteer culture, partnership with community to raise awareness of needs and foster a spirit of giving, leadership involvement and campaign coordination.
This is the fifth year in a row Pearce Elementary raised more than $10,000 for the United Way and the first for Northwest Middle.
“The partnership with GCS is invaluable to us,” says Ken Smith, 2016 campaign chair for the United Way of Greater High Point. “These gifts are invested in children and families who need help with anything from food and childcare to tutoring and housing and so much more, and we are grateful for that support.”
Michelle Gethers-Clark, President and CEO of United Way of Greater Greensboro added, “GCS employees continually demonstrate their commitment, both in and out of the classroom, to building a stronger community. Their generosity allows United Way to build systems that position children and their families on the pathway to self-sufficiency through education, skill building and employment.”
