Results of Listen and Learn Forums and Survey Released

Applauding a wide array of school choices and academic options, educating the whole child, needing to support the most vulnerable students and recruiting and retaining the best teachers were just a few of the major themes discussed during Superintendent Sharon L. Contreras’ Listen and Learn Tour.

Since joining GCS on August 22, Dr. Contreras made it a priority to hear what GCS families, teachers, staff and community members have to say about the district and what they see as GCS’ strengths, challenges and opportunities. She met with hundreds of people during 11 different Listen and Learn Forums, which were hosted by school board members across the county. Hundreds more responded to an online survey.

According to a qualitative analysis of the meeting notes and open-ended survey questions, parents and teachers believe GCS’ greatest strengths are in the variety of programs and schools available to students and families, as well as the district’s child-centered approach to instruction and high expectations.

Stakeholders also identified challenges in supporting some of the district’s most vulnerable students and closing the achievement gap. Participants encouraged even greater focus on educating the whole child and said they believe recruiting and retaining the best teachers for GCS will be one of the top challenges Contreras will face in the coming years.
